THE SHOPPING CIRCUIT

JAPAN AND “JAPANISM” IN TURIN AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

on the occasion of the “Beyond the KIMONO” exhibit – Fall 2003

On the occasion of the “Beyond the KIMONO” exhibit which takes place from October 1st to November 15th, 2003, at Palazzo Barolo (Turin), a shopping circuit about the exhibit’s theme has been created.

Nowadays Japan is more than ever becoming a source of inspiration. Visitors of the exhibit will be given a map of the city showing a highlighted itinerary which will help them discover all that can be found in Turin for an interesting shopping about Japan and Japanism. “Japanism” means the influence of the Japanese art on European decorative art starting from the beginning of the Twentieth century and becoming now stronger than ever in the food field, fashion, design, cinema, etc.

From the laboratory where to learn how to make Japanese pottery to tasting famous sushi, from the legendary Japanese pearls to the Japanese-inspired fashion trend, from shiatsu massage to the making of ikebana, from martial arts to antiques: it is going to be an amusing and curious walk through the beautiful palaces and courts of the historical city centre in order to discover "Japan and Japanism".

“EASTERN FASHION, WESTERN FASHION.

Turin, Como and Tokamachi united by a silk thread

Turin, Palazzo Birago di Borgaro – Seat of the Turin Chamber of Commerce

From October 1st to October 12th, 2003.

The “Beyond the KIMONO” exhibit taking place at Barolo Palace from October 1st to November 15th, 2003 will be the chance to particularly focus on Tokamachi and Como textile production. The two towns are twinned "by a silk thread".

The “Beyond the KIMONO” exhibit is under the sponsorship of the most important Japanese institutions as well as of the cities of Tokamachi and Como. It is undoubtedly going to be a major event and the Turin Chamber of Commerce has planned to invite as guest the Chamber of Commerce of Como, the city known to have the most beautiful silk of the world, whose manufacturers are High Fashion suppliers. Como has been twinned for 27 years with the city of Tokamachi, the protagonist of “Beyond the KIMONO”.

The magnificent halls of Palazzo Birago di Borgaro, the solemn representative seat of the Turin Chamber of Commerce are going to house the “Eastern Fashion, Western Fashion” exhibit and the most beautiful silk of the Como production which is going to be put beside the sketches of the Twenties and Thirties made by John Guida, the famous dress designer who worked for the most important Paris and Turin fashion houses.

The exhibit features 20 original sketches by John Guida which are extremely impressive also to those who know very little about these things and are a real “treat” to those who are into fashion history. It also features manikins wrapped in Como-made draped tissues similar to those reproduced on the sketches.

The link with the "Beyond the KIMONO" exhibit and therefore the reference to the Como-Tokamachi twinship will be explained through the exhibition of an important kimono given to the “Famiglia Comasca” by the Japanese city.

In addition to the wonderful Tokamachi kimono you will see an “obi” belts collection manufactured with selected Como tissues for the exhibit and strictly tied by Japanese masters from Tokamachi who came to Turin on purpose. Every single “knot” has a precise meaning that will be thoroughly explained to visitors.
